Tyler and I have been in the process of trying to find a home for close to two years now. Though rental life was nice while we were both in school and working full time, we dream of having a space of our own where we can raise our children.

We currently rent a space from my parents, which has been a huge blessing. However, the older Rosie gets, the more cramped a 2 bedroom, 1 bath apartment gets. Plus, who knew that baby stuff takes up SO much room!

We began seriously looking for homes just shortly after Rosie was born. However, after several failed offers, and months of searching, we decided to take a break.

I'll just say - Tyler is definitely the dreamer in our relationship, and I tend to be much more the realist. In my mind, we needed to find a reasonably priced home that would be our "starter" home, and down the road we could find something that fit our family better. However, Tyler kept pushing that he wanted us to be able to build a home that fit our family now.

When he suggested that we talk to my parents about possibly purchasing a piece of their property, I wasn't too keen on the idea. I definitely want Rosie to grow up near family, but I also know that there can be a lot of bumps in the road when it comes to family, money, land, and the legality of it all. Tyler finally decided to bring up the idea to my parents and they agreed to sell us a parcel of land.

However, it isn't just as easy as trading money and a deed. There has been a lot of discussion, and thought that has gone into the plan of building so close to my parents. Some of the things we considered when discussing whether or not to purchase the land were:

1. Is it favorable land for a septic system?

2. Is it going to be affordable? Are electric, water, road frontage, going to be easily accessible?

3. What happens when WE sell?

4. What happens when my parents sell?

5. Is it favorable for a basement?

6. Can we see ourselves living here long term?

If you have built or purchased a home, I would love to hear from you on some of the steps involved in the process! Since we are still very much in the planning stages, we are always trying to gather information and learn as much as possible.
